    How to use it

    1. Type the amount in figures, the payee's name exactly as on their ID or trade licence, and the date.
    2. Copy the amount in words (Arabic or English to match the cheque) and write it in the same words, then rule a line to the end.
    3. Compare your cheque with the preview box by box and read the mistakes list before you sign.

    Questions

Arabic or English for the words?

The language of the cheque: UAE cheques carry an Arabic line and an English line, so write on the line printed in that language. If there is one line only, follow its printed language. What matters is that the words match the figures.

What are the two slanted lines in the corner?

«A/C payee only»: the cheque can't be cashed or passed to someone else; it can only be deposited into the account of the payee written on it. Add them when a cheque travels by post or with a third person.

Why do banks return a cheque with a correction?

Any unsigned alteration to the amount or the name is refused. If you make a mistake, write a new cheque and keep the old one marked «cancelled».

Is a bounced cheque a crime in the UAE?

Since January 2022 a cheque returned for insufficient funds is collected civilly through direct enforcement; it remains a crime in bad-faith cases such as withdrawing the funds on purpose or ordering the bank not to pay without cause. See the «if you don't pay» tool.
