Do it myself or pay?

Washing the car, assembling furniture, painting a room, cleaning the AC, selling something — what does it really cost you to do it yourself? The tool works out your hour's value from your salary, adds tools, materials and the odds of doing it twice, and compares it with what someone charges. The answer is a number, not a feeling.

How to use it

  1. Type your monthly income and weekly working hours — your hour's value appears. Or type an hourly value directly.
  2. Pick a ready task or write your own: hours it takes you (including learning and errands), tools and materials, the service price.
  3. See the comparison and the verdict, and raise «I enjoy it» if the task is a hobby.

Questions

Why price my time when I'm not paid by the hour?

Because time is finite: an hour spent on the task isn't spent on other work, rest or family. Your salary per hour is the simplest fair measure, and you can change it if weekend time feels cheaper or dearer.

What is «chance of redoing»?

The odds the job comes out wrong and you redo it or call someone to fix it. 20% means one time in five costs you the service price on top of what you spent.

I buy the tools once?

Right, so divide a tool's price by the number of times you'll use it. A AED 150 drill used 10 times = 15 per job.

It says «pay» but I like doing it?

Do it. The «I enjoy it» setting raises the value of a hobby. The point is knowing the number, not obeying it.
